BBC Worldwide is the commercial arm of the BBC. Its businesses include international programming distribution, TV channels, and licensed product.

Project

BBC Worldwide were aware of many potential opportunities for their intellectual property in the Higher Education sector, but required research to ensure they made the right choices product structure and Shift Media were brought on to make recommendations for new product development that were based in the market.


Methodology

Shift Media focussed on key groups of decision makers. Contact techniques varied as appropriate and we used questionnaires, desk research, phone interviews and visits to departments themselves to talk to staff face to face in their offices. The visits were important in giving us a more realistic view of the degree to which audio visual resources were currently used.


Outcomes

We presented our findings to BBC Worldwide staff with recommendations, including:

- Ideas for new product offerings that would attract customers
- The markets to focus on for the best return
- Formats and types of content that would most appeal to the market

Subsequent to this research, BBC Worldwide Ltd and Pearson Education formed a partnership to publish BBC-branded educational products and services under a new imprint called BBC Active.
