Cambridge University
Press
Cambridge University Press is a publisher given a Royal Charter by Henry VIII in 1534. It published its first book in 1584, and has published at least one book every year since then, making it the oldest publishing and printing house in the world.
It is both an academic and educational publishing house, a printing factory, and the printer for official documents for the University of Cambridge. Authors published by Cambridge have included John Milton, William Harvey, Isaac Newton, Brian J. Ford and Stephen Hawking.
CASE STUDY
In 2007 Shift Media completed an accessibility and usability expert review with basic usability testing of the Cambridge Journals website. The usability review highlighted the problems on the website and we were able to test these hypotheses on real users taken from the target audience. This method was much more time efficient than performing a full scale usability testing programme, while still providing valuable user feedback.
Participants
Four particpants were recruited for the testing: two academics, one research
student and a librarian. We asked them to perform real tasks on the site
and watched how they performed.
The results offered a real insight into how people use the Cambridge Journals website and allowed us to offer concrete recommendations to make the site more user-focussed.
We asked Shift Media to help us review several aspects of our usability and accessibility to a very tight schedule. Their expert analysis, professional approach, clear advice and above all their understanding of our requirements was very impressive. As a result, their work has been extremely helpful to us and will guide the continuous improvement of our online publishing.
