Based in Cheltenham, Nelson Thornes was formed by the merger of Thomas Nelson and Stanley Thornes publishing companies in 2000.

In June 2007, Wolters Kluwer announced the completion of the sale of its Education division (including Nelson Thornes) to Bridgepoint Capital Limited. Regulatory approvals were received, and customary closing conditions have been met.
