Routledge
In 2007 we completed an accessibility overhaul of the Routledge Colloquial Italian companion website (opens in new window). We completely redesigned the site to take accessibility and usability into account and added additional features that would help those with disabilities make use of the resources.
The website is made up of pages of interactive quizzes which reinforce what has been learnt in the book, offering immediate feedback and a score after each quiz. A mixture of different sorts of quiz questions were incorporated, including: multiple choice, true and false and fill in the gap. Students were provided with information on how to create accents using the QWERTY keyboard, important where they have to write text in a foreign language when completing the quizzes.
Additional features were added that make the site easier to navigate for
blind users employing a screen reader and those with impaired motor skills
who cannot make use of the mouse to navigate. A skiplinks feature was
added to the top of every page which allows those navigating using the
keyboard, or those using a screen reader, to access the unit menu and
main content directly without tabbing through the toolbars first. Also
included in the design was a tool which allows the visually impaired to
increase the size of the text.
