Shift Media offer workshop days in a number of our areas of expertise. We also run the Introduction to Market Research course for the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP).

Our training courses are aimed at marketing executives, marketing managers, market research co-ordinators, development editors, acquisitions editors, commissioning editors and publishers.

Surveys are conducted regularly in many areas of academic and educational publishing – whether they are used to obtain information about the size or preferences of a market, to solicit feedback on a specific proposal or to determine author or reader satisfaction.

But with academics, librarians and students inundated with requests for their participation, how can you make sure that your survey gets a slice of their time? And how can you write questionnaires that really give you meaningful results?

This training day aims to give publishers, editors, marketing personnel and development editors an introduction to getting the most out surveys – the most commonly used and abused method of research the industry currently employs. More information.

Focus groups for Higher Education publishing

Focus groups are a vital tool for gaining a deep understanding of the motivations and attitudes of customers and users. They can be used productively for a range of purposes from developing new and innovative product ideas to testing marketing campaigns and branding strategies. To be both useful and cost effective, focus groups need to be undertaken with care. This course will help participants to plan, organize, facilitate and analyse focus groups. More information.
